Current Resident Last Name: Don't know
Street Address: Route 105
Stories and History:
My great grandparents, George and Lucinda Grinnell, lived in this house in the 1800's and early 1900's. My grandfather, Edward Grinnell grew up in this house. He married and raised his four children here. I can remember coming to this house when I was very small, around 1961. The house was sold in the early 1960's. Photo #250.gif is the barn across the street that went with this piece of property. Photo #251.gif was the house next door where my grandfather's brother Jesse Grinnell lived.
These houses are located on Route 105 almost on the Burkettville line.

I know that my grandparents, Albert and Gertrude Moody lived in this house duting the 40s and that my dad, Joseph Moody ran the garage out of the building that was on the property. He sold gas and did car repairs. Maurice Collins was his helper. He had to give the garage up because so many people owed him money that was in 1949. Both of my gardparents had died and we swapped houses with Maynard and Blanche Brown and they lived there for many years. it was one of the newer and nicer houses in town. Stories and History:
I grew up in this house and don't even know where to begin w/ the memories and stories! I spent 18 yr. in this house and now enjoy taking my own kids to the house that will always be to me home. I will never forget (and probably won't be forgiven for telling this story lol) the day that my father bought a spedometer for my brothers bike. In his attempt to demonstrate to the rest of us just how this spedometer worked, my father ran the bicycle directly into the picnic table and flung himself head over heals through the air. I've never seen so many people laugh at a grown man in all my life! Not one of us could stop laughing long enough to ask if he was ok! I also remember as a child having a beagle I named Honeybun. I would go to her dog house and sit w/ her and talk about everything to that dog! What a good friend she was! I also remember the day my brother and I left a black crayon on the front steps and it melted, actually, I think it has only been fairly recently that you can no longer see where tthe crayon was! Who'da thought a melted crayon would stay on steps for so many years! I love this house!!

Stories and History:
This house has since been converted into 3 apartments and is owned by Marie Starrs. We have lived in one of the apartments here for over 2 years. Hey, who can beat the view huh! While living here both of our children have had their first birthdays and taken their first steps in this apartment. I love calling this home! In a few weeks we will be moving into a brand new trailer on the other end of the ridge. I grew up 3 houses away from here and will be moving w/ in 3 miles of that house. I don't go far, I love Appleton too much!

Stories and History:
My Dad bought this house from Freeman Gushee in about 1952 and we spent several summers there. He sold the house sometime in the 1970s when he moved to California. The church which held the town library was on one side of us. Ruth and Bill Mitchell and their two young daughters lived on the other sideof us. The Demuths lived the next house up - the kids were Stanley, Jackie and Ann. Across the way lived Fannie Gushee who was then in her 80's.

HouseID: 018a.gif and 292.gif
Stories and History:
This home was a dormitory for the summer Youth Camps and Camp Meetings for the Church of God in Maine for many years up until the middle to late 60's. It was also a summer Bible School as far back as 1936 for the Church of God. The property was purchased by the Rev. James T. Murray and he lived there for several years until his health required him to move to Scarborough, Me. where he lived his daughter, Pauline Lane. He and his wife are buried in the Appleton, Me. cemetary on the hill.

Tay: Sorry, I was so excited about seeing the buildings that I forgot to put the ID # in. The building is: #018a Gif and # 292 (they are the same). The large two story building in photo # 294 to the left was also part of the complex. It had a single story section attached to the back which was a dining hall where 3 meals a day were served during the meetings. There was also a concession stand which I did not see in any of the photos. There were also two outhouses (Men & Women) a distance in the rear of the complex, very smelly, I recall as a child, something you'd never forget! *LOL*

There was a church which belonged to the Church of God across the street from the complex and I see it in photo #283. It is just to the left of the big white church with the steeple. This small building remains today as I saw it when I was there a couple weeks ago.

I noticed in the Appleton 1850 Circa that the #018a photo was the 3rd in line. I do not know when the Church of God purchased the property, but I can find out. My mother has a professional photograph taken of the Bible School students and instructors in 1936. I will get it from her and scan the photo and send it along sometime next week.

Photo # 086 use to be Melcher's Store, I believe, however, it was the only variety store at the top of the hill, after walking across the St. George River Bridge. We always looked forward to spending our vacation money there!

I must say I have MANY wonderful memories there which will be a special part of my life forever. If you need any more info, I will try to get it from my mom. She will be 87 years old this month. She attended Bible School there as a teenager.

Sincerely,

Margo Huff

Stories: The home was originally built for the Robert Meyers family of
Plymouth, MA. The home was built on Gurneytown Road on
property previously part of the Roland Gushee Farm. Behind
the home are trail roads on the property that will take you to
the top of Jones Mountain where you can see commanding views
of Appleton and Sennebec Pond. Also on the property is a
silver mine. The entrance still exists. At the turn of the
century the mine was active, but the expense to bring out the
ore was such that a few years after beginning operation the
mine was shut down.

Stories: This picture, I am sure, is my grandmother Elizabeth Gushee.
Two lovely women of Appleton held the name of Elizabeth
Gushee, marrying brothers. This Elizaeth Gushee was married
to Robert Gushee. She loved painting mostly because of the
social time it gave her. I have many of her paintings and not
one is more precious to me than another. I believe that this
particular art exhibit was held on Appleton Ridge across from
what we always called "The Mansion". My grandmother would
always remark that she got too much for her paintings. She
would put a price on them not expecting to get it and then
almost complain that she got what she asked. A funny, lovely
warm lady that is sadly missed by her family.

HouseID: 329.gif
Stories: This house holds some of my very fondest child hood memories.
My family lived in this house from the early to late 50's. My
father, Freeman Gushee, built the chicken barn that once held
a Halloween party for my sister. The attic was a place for
neighborhood children to play school. The hill was the
perfect place to slide in the winter (from the top of the
ridge to Merton Wadsworth's store at the bottom of the hill).
This house had a beautiful stained glass window in the front
room that has since been taken out. I rember my father would
take his daughters to cut down a Christmas tree in the back
woods from this house. I would get tired, cold and often
times lose my boots and he would perch me on a stump and
patiently move on to cut down a tree that would turn out to be
the most beautiful thing one could ever imagine. The barn is
no longer in existance. We had a piano in the front room for
my oldest sister to practice. My father made it a beautiful
house and my mother made it a warm home. I will forever think
of Appleton as my home town because of this house and the
grand memories it holds.
